The Hazards

Sheoaks is a custom built B & B.  Designed by Leigh Woolley, one of Tasmania’s leading architects, the house maximizes use of its superb waterfront site and appears to float above the sea and the sheoaks.

  • Deck and guest sitting room look out over Great Oyster Bay - a perfect place to watch the sun set with a dozen oysters and a glass of wine, both local of course.
  • Our sitting room has a wood heater, tea and coffee making facilities, comfortable chairs, old fashioned games, books and magazines, TV and DVD's. Relax there or enjoy chatting with your fellow guests. Free WiFi access too.
  • Three guest bedrooms, each accommodating two guests in either queen or twin/king pillow topped beds.
  • All guest bedrooms have views to the estuary of the Swan River.
  • All rooms have en-suite facilities, individually controlled electric heating, electric blankets, hair dryers, quality linen and towels and a comprehensive compendium.
  • Décor is a pleasant mix of ultra modern with restored cottage furniture and carefully chosen art works, giving a casual beachy feel.
  • Full cooked breakfasts feature great Tasmanian produce. Meet your fellow guests in the dining room or eat on the deck during summer.
  • Packed lunches are available for walkers, luxury hampers for those treating themselves to a celebration weekend, or light snacks served on the deck if your preference is to stay at home.
  • Evening meals by arrangement, including celebration meals and barbeques.
  • Special dietary needs accommodated with advance notice.
  • SHEOAKS is not suitable for children due to its proximity to an unfenced cliff.
  • SHEOAKS is a smoke free environment.

LOW SEASON SPECIAL, 1 JUNE - 30 SEPT- stay 2 or more nights and enjoy a free evening meal one night.

Hepburn Point

The Freycinet Peninsula is a special place where you cannot help but unwind. We are on the outskirts of the village of Coles Bay and 5 km from the main entrance and Information Centre forFreycinet National Park. Apart from sitting on the deck and simply relaxing, what is there for guests to do?

Walking: the coast path immediately below SHEOAKS leads to the mouth of the Swan River and Swanwick Beach. Inside the National Park you'll find walks ranging from short to long, easy to difficult. More walking tracks criss cross the conservation areas outside the park. Tell us what sort of walk you want to do and we'll be happy to suggest something suitable and tell you how to get there. We'll even lend you books on Freycinet's wildflowers, birds and animals to pop in your day pack.

Bird watching: a pair of sea eagles live nearby, while Moulting Lagoon (a Ramsar site) is a haven for all manner of water birds, including migratory waders over summer. Don’t miss a penguin tour at Bicheno where these amazing little birds walk by only feet away. From November till April watch the mutton birds come home to their burrows as dark falls at Swansea. We can provide a local bird list and field guides.

Sheoaks

What else?

  • Whales are in the area from May till October and some calve in the bay. We sometimes see them from our deck. There's a scope and binoculars.
  • Cruise down the peninsula and into Wineglass Bay. A qualified guide will tell you all about our special environment. You'll usually see dolphins and maybe seals, whales and albatrosses. Daily in summer. Closed June, July and August.
  • Hire a tinnie then go fishing and barbeque your catch for dinner.
  • Bring your mountainbike and give your legs a workout riding to Bluestone Bay or White Water Wall.
  • If your knees aren't up to the regular Wineglass Bay walk catch the aqua taxi to Hazards Beach then walk across the isthmus - easy! Picnic on Wineglass Bay beach then stroll back to Hazards for your return pick up.
  • Buy a dozen of the freshest possible oysters for lunch at the nearby Marine Farm. Cooked crayfish also available in summer.
  • Take a flight over the peninsula - an absolute must for photographers.
  • Explore the bay by sea kayak or Canadian canoe.
  • Charter a boat to take you to one of the far flung beaches on the Peninsula, to Schouten Island or to go fishing.
  • For an adrenalin rush, learn to abseil with an experienced guide.
  • Combine adventure and sight seeing on a 4-wheel motorbike tour.
  • Be driven along a NP fire trail in a Polaris Ranger by a knowledgeable guide.
  • Sample the vintage at local wineries.
  • Indulge in afternoon tea at Kate’s Berry Farm.
  • Discover marine life in its own environment from a glass bottomed boat in the gulch at Bicheno.
  • Do a DIY history walk of Swansea - one of Tasmania's oldest towns.
